From Wildlife Smuggler to Conservation Informant: A Hidden Transformation in Pakistan

He was once part of the darkness… today, he is a messenger of light.

His identity is being kept confidential.

He used to be among Pakistan’s most prominent and seasoned wildlife smugglers someone with an extraordinary ability to arrange the trafficking of any wild animal from any corner of the country.

Whether it was rare and endangered wildlife, snakes, foxes, or other native species—he could source anything, which is why he was considered one of the top suppliers in the country.

Around a decade ago, I connected with him through social media.

At first, it was just a brief and cautious interaction… but over time, it developed into trust. As our conversations continued, he began to closely observe my work my on-ground efforts, the realities I was highlighting, and the awareness I was trying to build around wildlife conservation.

Those efforts left a deep impact on him.

Gradually, his perspective started to shift. What began as simple conversations turned into deeper discussions about the consequences of wildlife trafficking and the importance of protecting rare and endangered wildlife. He wasn’t changing overnight but the process had begun.

I gave that trust a purpose.

Based on the information he provided, we managed to rescue hundreds of snakes and other wild animals across dozens of cases sometimes through the wildlife department, and sometimes directly with his help.

While still being part of the smuggling network at the time, he started sharing timely intelligence with us. Those very tips became the reason many lives were saved. He also played a key role in assisting with several high-profile wildlife smuggling cases involving native species.

Then one day, everything changed.

About two years ago, he made the decision to leave that illegal world behind completely.

It wasn’t just a decision… it was a transformation.

Today, not only has he distanced himself from that trade, but he is also quietly playing an effective role in wildlife conservation. The recent fox and civet smuggling case was also reported by him, and he even assisted in a high-profile case involving rare and endangered native wildlife, helping authorities prevent further trafficking before it could escalate.

We can make change if we start with pure intentions and sincere effort. Real transformation doesn’t always begin with systems or institutions, it often begins with individuals choosing a different path, guided by awareness, responsibility, and honesty in their actions.
